Apple cider vinegar which is rich in acetic acid, has gained popularity due to its alleged health advantages, including antibacterial and antioxidant properties, as well as potential blood sugar management. Its use as a health remedy dates back to ancient times, with Hippocrates employing it to address wounds, fever, and skin sores.

Apple cider aids weight loss

A recent experimental study investigates the potential benefits of apple cider vinegar for weight loss, blood glucose, and blood lipids. Findings indicate a potential reduction in all three areas, but consuming apple cider vinegar may not offer straightforward results with just a daily drink.

Researchers in Lebanon conducted a rigorous clinical trial involving overweight and obese youth aged 12–25. The study employed a double-blinded, randomized design, dividing 30 participants into four groups. Each group was instructed to consume varying amounts of apple cider vinegar diluted in water daily for 12 weeks, while a control group consumed a placebo.

The study aimed to assess the effects of apple cider vinegar on weight management. This methodological approach ensures high-quality evidence, as it allows for establishing cause-and-effect relationships, and the double-blinded nature prevents bias in data collection.

After three months, consuming apple cider vinegar was associated with notable decreases in body weight and BMI. On average, participants lost 6–8kg in weight and reduced BMI by 2.7–3 points, with significant reductions in waist and hip circumference also observed.

Acetic acid in apple cider vinegar promotes fat metabolism

The study showed notable reductions in blood glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels among participants consuming apple cider. Conversely, those in the placebo group experienced lesser decreases in weight and BMI, along with no significant changes in blood glucose and lipids. Research suggests that acetic acid in apple cider vinegar may influence genes related to fat metabolism, though this study didn’t investigate this aspect of weight loss.

It is important to note that apple cider vinegar may pose a risk of tooth enamel erosion. Dentists suggest several precautions to minimize this risk: rinsing the mouth with tap water, avoiding immediate tooth brushing, and using a straw to reduce contact with teeth.
