The 2019 garlic festival which was held on Sunday in Gilroy, California ended in disaster after a gunman attacked, killing three people including two children.

Police confirmed on Monday that a six-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were among the victims that died in the shooting. The shooting also claimed the life of a young man believed to be in his 20s. The authorities also reported that about 12 people were injured during the shooting but survived. Fortunately, Gilroy police quickly reacted to the incident and gunned down the shooter.

The gunman reportedly gained access to the heavily secure festival grounds by cutting through a fence. Witnesses revealed that the shooter came from behind the stage and just started shooting aimlessly. The gun used in the shooting was a high-powered rifle

The shooter was a 19-year-old

The authorities identified the deceased shooter as 19-year-old Santino William Legan. Scot Smith, chief of police in Gilroy reported that Legan acquired the gun on July 9 in Nevada and that it was a legal purchase. So far the police have not identified any motive for the shooting despite carrying out a thorough search of a house that belongs to Legan’s family.

An anonymous source told the Los Angeles Times that detectives have also been looking into Legan’s social media posts and family background to try and piece together a motive for the shooting. The attacker posted a photo highlighting the Gilroy Garlic Festival on his Instagram just a few hours before the shooting. However, the photo has since been pulled down.

“Ayyy garlic festival time come get wasted on overpriced ….” read the caption on Legan’s Instagram page.

Kawika Palacios, a next-door neighbor to the Legan family revealed in an interview that the family has been part of the neighborhood for almost 2 decades. He also revealed that the Legan family seems like a normal family. It is still not clear what drove Legan to carry out the heinous act. The Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting adds to the list of shooting incidents in the U.S. Events that have fueled conversations about gun control laws in the country.
