In the next decade, PDE5-inhibiting drugs became a famous cure for erectile dysfunction. It is now quite interesting that these drugs could be a cure for neurodegenerative diseases.

A Bright Future

The head of study and research at Harvard Medical School, Alfred Goldberg, who plays an important role in these findings, says that the study could collectively help in understanding the underlying cause of the serial neurodegenerative ailments and a few other muscles and cardiac ailments. Getting to the root cause of the problem will help answer possible questions as to why the proteins end up in a folded state.

When the body senses damaged or excess proteins, it activates a garbage disposal mechanism involving proteasomes, which help flush out those molecules. Proteasomes is a complex protein that identifies the toxic proteins to remove from the body. The dysfunction of the proteasome mechanism is the major cause of neurodegenerative diseases. The sildenafil drug can heighten the proteasome activity in the body, helping it destroy and clear out toxic proteins more effectively.

As they continue with the research, scientists warn against using Sildenafil and tadalafil as a conclusive treatment for Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s diseases. We’re hopeful that these findings shall lead to more advanced research and results in the coming years.
