Many studies promote the use of caffeinated coffee in balanced diets. However, a survey conducted by the American Heart Association reported that though coffee reduces the amount of sleep, it also increases the experience of abnormal heartbeats.

The study authors highlighted the various effects of drinking coffee and distinguished the good consequences from the bad.

How researchers conducted the study

The study ran for 14 days. Researchers concluded that the consumption of coffee rises a form of irregular heartbeats. The study authors collected data from 100 adults. They tracked their usage of coffee and recorded ECG devices to monitor the participant’s heart rhythm.

The study authors advised the target group to wear wrist devices to track their physical activities and sleep duration—the research team assigned each participant to avoid or increase their coffee consumption. The assignments, switched after two days to gather precise results.

The study authors presented their results via the American Heart  Association’s scientific season 2021.

The study revealed that the consumption of coffee causes 54% of premature ventricular contractions. The participants who observed this reported their hearts skipping a beat.

However, caffeine consumption affected the amount of sleep that the participants had each night.  The study also detailed the findings made by the Fitbit devices.

The devices detailed that after their coffee consumption, the participant’s sleep decreased by 18 minutes. The authors also reported that they did not observe any alterations in the participant’s blood sugar levels on the dates of coffee consumption.

An individual’s genes play a crucial role in metabolizing caffeinated coffee.

The study authors utilized the samples obtained from the participants. They found that coffee consumers with genetic variants, enhancing a faster caffeine metabolism, are at a higher risk of irregular heartbeats.

These findings revealed that the individuals who lost more sleep after the consumption of coffee metabolized caffeine slower.

Dr. Gregory Marcus, the lead author, stated that coffee promoted more physical activity and various health benefits. However, he added that reduced sleep is a factor of adverse psychiatric neurologic and cardiovascular outcomes. Many studies have only focused on the benefits of coffee consumption.
