In addition, a recent study discovered that adopting healthy lifestyle practices can significantly impact cognition. 

Seven habits to adopt to reduce risk of dementia 

According to a research team affiliated with the American Academy of Neurology, the greater the number of such habits that females incorporate, the less likely they are to develop dementia. Here are seven habits from American Heart Association’s Life’s Simple 7 women can adopt to promote cardiovascular and brain health. 

  • Engaging in physical activity
  • Adopting a healthier diets
  • Sustaining an ideal body mass
  • Abstaining from smoking
  • Managing blood pressure within a healthy range
  • Regulating cholesterol levels
  • Keeping blood sugar levels in check

ScD of Brigham and Women’s Hospital Pamela Rist said that dementia begins in the brain years before a diagnosis. Therefore, it is critical to learn how habits and lifestyles in middle age will impact one’s risk of dementia in later years. 

Researchers followed 13,720 women for two decades and used Medicare information to determine the number of women that developed dementia. The women were, on average, 54 years at the beginning of the Study, and 13% of the subjects had a dementia diagnosis in 20 years. 

Complying with healthy lifestyles reduces the risk of dementia 

The women were scored based on how they adhered to healthy behaviors. The individuals were given a score of zero for the subpar or moderate physical condition or a score of one for optimal well-being within each classification, resulting in a maximum achievable total score of seven.

According to the findings, the elderly females obtained an average rating of 4.3 at the onset of the research and 4.2 ten years later. These outcomes imply that, typically, the subjects complied with slightly over four of the recommended healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Findings indicate that a one-point increase in score decreases the risk of dementia by 6%. Generally, the more healthy habits a woman adopts from Life’s Simple 7, the greater reduction in the risk of cognitive decline.
